In which we celebrate Pi day

Both of you readers of this blog know all about pi. 3.141592653589793238462643327950105... and so on. That's as many digits as came into my head just now. Pi happens to be one of my favorite numbers. (When people ask me to pick a number between one and ten, I generally pick pi.)

Today is Pi Day, a favorite of math teachers the world over. And of a few geeks. Last year Val baked me an apple pie with a pi inscribed on it.

This year I took her out to the local beanery for pie. The 896 Diner is under new management, and it's a lot cleaner and the food is a lot better than the old place used to be. Our motorcycle club even eats there now for its monthly breakfast.

So we're regulars.

They greeted us warmly, as usual, and were delighted when we told them we were out to celebrate the day. We ordered a slice of blueberry and of cherry pie, both a la mode, coffee in our own mugs, which Val had made in her pottery class, and are kept on the cup shelf behind the lunch counter. The manager and his SO asked about the MARS MC club breakfast yesterday, and we told them that everyone had a good time, but the poor waitresses seemed disorganized, if cheerful, and they brought out too much (!) food, and didn't have the orders straight. But we didn't mind, and were coming back next month.
When it came time to leave, they wouldn't let us pay—it was on the house. We left a $3.14 tip.

Perhaps, if I'd known earlier, I'd have baked a pie to celebrate. We are having our own celebration of sorts. Our 2nd day of vacation which has been spent in total relaxation. I blogged about the first day at www.profitableprose.blogspot.com which you are welcome to poke around on.
I remember checking this site awhile back. The night time reading rings a bell. That's really a great idea. Happy reading.
